Exploring the History of the Five Worlds

Wind Reader

On a developed planet, the very air is full of information.  Networks of it slide seamlessly through or around each other and inhabit all of the beings on the planet.  To the typical blade of grass, tree, rock, or even human, this all happens in a way that we cannot feel, hear, or see.  But some humans have been genetically altered and their blood seeded with nanotechnology.  To these people, the vast amount of information in the air is readable.  They call it the wind of data.  These are the Wind Readers.

Reading the Wind is dangerous.  The flows of voices and ideas, numbers and reports, poetry and song can be too large.  It can be internally inconsistent as the views of more than one group argues with other views.  It can be heartbreaking as wind readers are silent witnesses at deaths and disasters.  The wind of data can burn the soul of a human.

But with it, comes power, and the ability to make more than things.  A wind reader can alter life.  The very best can almost create it.
